Abstract

Stellate sturgeon Acipenser stellatus were reared in monoculture during the first year of life (age class I) in two 0.5 ha ponds and in polyculture with silver carp, grass carp and common carp for the second and third year (age class II and III) in ponds of various sizes at the Brates fish farm Galati Romania. In the 0.5 ha ponds stocked at the density of 5000 fingerling ha–1 (weight 0.5 g), the average body weight of age class I was 30 g after 87 days. The survival averaged 31and 32%. The total production reached 44.8 and 46.5 kg ha–1. In the second year of life, the stellate sturgeons were stocked in two ponds of different size, at the density of 43 individuals ha–1, after a grow‐out period of 189 days, the final body weight reached in both ponds 210 g (individual weight gain 167 g). The survival was 74 and 76% and the net production 5.8 kg ha–1. The net production for the associated carp species stocked at 100–125 kg/ha with a size of 20–30 g was 908 and 728 kg ha–1 in the 15 ha and the 22 ha ponds, respectively. The survival was between 70 and 90%. During the 3rd summer stellate sturgeon stocked at densities of 210 individuals ha–1 showed in the 8 and 25 ha ponds a net production of 16 and 0 kg ha–1 with a survival of 75 and 40%, respectively. The total net production including carps was 883 and 640 kg ha–1 in the 8 and 25 ha ponds, respectively. The survival of cyprinids ranged from 55 to 80%. The main problem encountered was in summer the high water temperature recorded (up to 36 °C) and a shortage of food (benthic organisms regularly declined during the summer and disappeared in September). This work indicated that the stellate sturgeon can be farmed in the Romanian cyprinid polyculture systems as additional species introduced in low density but improvements are required to rise the growth and survival of sturgeon especially in large ponds.
